Sore Throat (2023) is an interactive film installation that explores how sound overheard through walls has impacted queer people and spaces in the Philippines, where the interpretation of sound is informed by monstrous mythology and the distortions of colonisation and gentrification. In the film’s glowing midnight world, a character played by Davide Bugarin shapeshifts between matador, coloniser, emcee and young queer Filipino. Shot on location in Manila and in a constructed space, the 20-minute film blends cabaret and moving image with a new interactive technology, developed with Studio Autonomic. As in live cabaret, the on-screen performer breaks the fourth wall and commands the audience to make noises, both adorative and animalistic. Theatrical backdrops, costuming and song fill this illusionistic world, where monstrosity lingers but cannot be pinned

Sore Throat (or Magang Lalamunan in Tagalog) draws upon historical and contemporary interpretations of sound heard through walls in the Philippines, and personal queer experiences. In rural Luzon, we witness a knock at the door. ‘Tao po!’, the traditional announcement (‘I am human’) is heard. It declares that the voice is not a monster’s. Filipino folklore has long been filled with Aswang, monstrous creatures who shape-shift into animals such as dogs, crocodiles and birds. As Spanish colonisers set upon the Philippines in the 16th century, they exploited pre-existing beliefs to propagate the notion that women and queer people were Aswang. At night, it can be hard to tell if the noises heard through the walls of homes are the calls of jungle animals or the cries of an Aswang. This tension permeates the film, as the thin theatrical walls struggle to contain either safety or sound.

	&#60;img width="2000" height="3556" width_o="2000" height_o="3556" src_o="https://cortex.persona.co/t/original/i/c73652cdc3e6e9d82037b841928264c47e3f54725adb5241cae318bd05f97fdb/Sore-Throat_Still_walkback_small.jpg" data-mid="1417949" border="0" /&#62;
	&#60;img width="2000" height="3556" width_o="2000" height_o="3556" src_o="https://cortex.persona.co/t/original/i/28c62ad924902f3e115c6321a62df5c961d45750a6d6066e97db95d3eb12bbff/Sore-Throat_Still.jpg" data-mid="1417950" border="0" /&#62;

As rejection and self-judgment swirl, the sole performer is plucked from rural Luzon to Manila, a city that has long been a destination for queer Filipinos. Areas such as Malate have come alive at night as queer districts, with karaoke bars bustling and streets becoming overflow social spaces. Yet the vested interests of new businesses and residents desire a more quiet and respectable neighbourhood, and the sound of late-night performance reverberates against them.

 &#60;img width="2000" height="1333" width_o="2000" height_o="1333" src_o="https://cortex.persona.co/t/original/i/caa078f1f13716893f937b8de2c8d3bfea2dd6961ba3773f35ca436f37efacb2/Sore-Throat-2023-byBugarin-Castle_Install-at-Fruitmarket-Photo-by-Sally-Jubb-3.jpg" data-mid="1417951" border="0" /&#62;At the entrance to the gallery is a capiz shell curtain - a vibrating entrance covering that has been rendered digitally and made static. Surrounding the film projection are four hanging banners, reminiscent of the wings of a theatre. The imagery upon them is created from a photo taken by a dentist of the inside of the performer’s mouth. This human form has been constructed as space in architectural software before being transformed into millions of digital sequins. The audience finds themselves amongst this glittered throat as they experience voices passing through the fourth wall and physical walls, shaking certainties in a contested world.

Sore Throat, (or Magang Lalamunan in Tagalog) is an interactive film that explores how sound overheard through walls has impacted queer people and queer spaces in the Philippines, where the interpretation of sounds is informed by monstrous mythology and the distortions of colonisation and gentrification.

The research-driven work is filmed in Edinburgh and Manila and features music from Manila-based band Kalye Teresa. Produced by queer arts company Pollyanna, Sore Throat blends cabaret and moving image using a newly developed interactive technology made with Studio Autonomic. As in live cabaret, audience members make noises as guided by the on-screen performer for the film to proceed.

In a glowing midnight world a performer traverses shape-shifting forms and spaces. Sound and music travels from rural Philippines to the Malate queer district of Manila. Maximalist spaces glimmer from birds-eye view on vertically-sliding theatrical backdrops.

Surrounding them is our audience, who are conducted to make noises, breaking through the theatrical fourth wall.

		<description>POLLYANNA

A REAL LIFE SHOW! (ONLINE)1 to 4 October 2020
In October 2020, we put on a real show in Paradise Palms with no audience and streamed it out to the world.

We got together an incredible line-up of alternative and queer cabaret performers:Featuring terrifically fierce and soft queer rap from RHYS’s PIECES, heel-kicking lip-syncing back-breaking glory from DESERT STORM, a peek into the world of trash and 80s horror from MISS ANNABEL SINGS, rap that is unafraid to challenge stereotypes and annihilate assumptions from NOVA SCOTIA THE TRUTH and inflatable shark dance attack from HAIRY TEDDY BEAR. This is all hosted by our feral drag creature and beautiful disaster host POLLYFILLA. Plus ICED GEM on the decks and a DJ mix by APHID after the show. Hold your cocktail glasses tight on your sofa as we are crashing onto your screens.

There is no debasing them, for they are glorious in their torn lace, jockstrap, corset and roadkill wig. They will engage in any act and transcend shame.’ (ScotsGay)NOVA SCOTIA THE TRUTHWinner of the Scottish Album of the Year 2020, Nova Scotia the Truth is a rap artist unafraid to challenge stereotypes and annihilate assumptions. OMOS is inspired by connections between Puck’s Glen, Stirling Castle and Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, which is also connected to a historical performance given to King James VI of Scotland. At Stirling Castle in 1594, a feared lion was replaced by an unnamed Black man, who pulled a chariot through the castle’s Great Hall. He was one of a number of Black people who appeared in performances at the Scottish court throughout Scottish history. This film is an homage to those people and a celebration of Black performance in Scotland today.

The name OMOS was originally an acronym for the phrase ‘O monstrous! O strange!’, a quote from A Midsummer Night’s Dream. As the project developed, this phrase has been morphed to stand for ‘Our Movement, Our Stories’. The film has an ambiguous title of solely OMOS.

In OMOS, the artists occupy space as they both draw on the past and look to the future.

‘It’s packed and noisy, rowdy and messy, queerly experimental and reassuringly different’★★★★ The Scotsman

Our cabaret nights showcase the best and messiest queer talent. We love the alternative, the queer, the messy, the political and the glitzy. We showcase drag, performance art, queer cabaret performance and more, featuring over 250 performers over five years. The show is hosted by queer feral creature Pollyfilla. The Pollyanna cabaret team features resident queen Desert Storm, DJ Aphid, producer Annlouise Butt, and we have worked with assistant producer Beth Sitek and DJ Sydd Viscose.
In October 2020 during the pandemic we produced Pollyanna: a real life show!

We have produced our showcase cabaret nights at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe and throughout the year 2015-2019 and online in 2020. We have hosted over 250 artists across 75 shows and four venues, including our wonderful home venue Paradise Palms who have supported us since 2015.

★★★★★Edinburgh Festivals Magazine“Pollyanna is the only queer collective you want to see this Fringe.’
“It is seldom you find a queer cabaret that truly delivers in all regards, but the diversity Pollyanna celebrates secures its place at the top of the list.”

★★★★The Scotsman“It’s packed and noisy, rowdy and messy, queerly experimental and reassuringly different – a welcome reminder that the Fringe is not only the place to catch a hot ticket or see a famous face but also to take a chance on the weird, the wild and the Weetabix, and then keep on dancing.”
